Do you have a flea problem?

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably encountered the odd flea scare at one point in your life. Pets such as cats and dogs are prone to contracting fleas and when they’re brought into the home they can cause serious disruption and discomfort for both you and your pets.

The 3 common flea signs to look out for

  • It is not uncommon to find fleas in a house you have just moved into, as the previous owners may have been completely unaware of the infestation.
  • If you have pets and they’re constantly flinching and biting their skin, you may want to get them checked for fleas, as this is a common indication on contraction.
  • If you yourself believe you may have fleas, look out for bites low on your leg.

Fleas can also cause medical problems such as flea allergy, tapeworms, irritation of the skin and in extreme cases, anaemia.

What are fleas?

Fleas are tiny dark brown parasitic insects that infiltrate the hair and more importantly the skin of animals and your pets. Despite that grotesqueness, fleas are actually incredible insects, being over to jump 150 times their size and live for up to a year without food! Their jump is the equivalent of a human jumping over 300 metres!

Their jump is what makes them to good at latching onto your pets and other animals. It allows them to hop from one host to another with ease, despite being wingless.

A flea’s main diet is the blood it sucks from its host, this is the only nutrition source they require to stay alive. Female fleas have the ability to consume around 15 times their own body weight in blood each day!

The blood that they are not able to digest is excreted from the flea and dries to form what is known as ‘flea dirt‘ – horrible, right? Flea dirt then becomes food for larvae. Flea dirt is the most obvious sign that you have a flea infestation.
